When she squeezed out from behind the bookcase and under the curtain, all the glass windows were dark and the gas lights were out.

They made their way through the maze of black book canyons, turning one way and then the next, until it occurred to Soolie to worry that they might not actually find their way back tonight. But then they spied a dim and distant light and followed it to find the main room lit, silent, and empty.

The sounds of their footsteps on the iron stair bounced and bickered in the vaulting stillness. Had Tilla not come for them and Adon not sent for her?

The halls of the house were also eerily quiet.

There was something comforting about desolation in a space meant for so many people. Neither of them talked. When it came time to turn toward the bedroom, Soolie kept walking. Dog halted, tilting his head. She waved him to follow. She wanted to go to the throne room.

As they neared the great bright doors, she could hear the sounds of movement, not the robust joy of feasting, but a scattered clinking and clattering. She placed both hands on one of the doors and slowly pushed, poking her head in.

The throne room was an aftermath of half-eaten carcasses and tossed fruit cores, spilled gravy puddles and smashed glassware. Men and women in simple white garb worked in silence scrubbing tables and piling dishes, mopping and polishing the floors. The throne sat empty on the dais.

It called to her. Without thinking, she started to step into the room when Dog whispered.

“Mistress?”

She shrank back, shut the door, and turned. “What?” she hissed.

He bowed. “Perhaps I could show you something?”
